When I first started going to FNM, the events were free, but you are correct that now they normally have a small entry fee. Good catch and fixed! Thank you so much, I knew something sounded weird as I typed that. Save that stuff for hard mode, and keep the standard mode that tells the story and unlocks the cards very easy. And if the new campaign requires special decks to be built with certain mechanics and interactions in mind, then requires you to play the deck reasonably well, he may not be able to do that. I don't know exactly how he would respond to some of these changes but if he wanted to just play an all Valkyrie deck because he just got a premium legendary, but the gauntlet said he couldn't play Justice cards, he would not be very happy. Keeping him happy is the primary goal of the developers because he is the one paying the bills. He also spent a TON of money on the game and has a near full collection. He never cares about tournaments, is not on reddit, doesn't read articles like this, mostly plays PVE because he gets crushed in PVP, and just enjoys playing fun synergies and big hitters. For example, I have a friend that plays a ton of Eternal casually. I would embrace that change, and honestly, most people on this subreddit might, but they aren't the whole playerbase, nor particularly representative of the whole playerbase. While I definitely think that adding a "hard mode" is strictly better than not doing so, reworking all of the campaigns and gauntlets to force you to build a new/unique deck each time, even for the non-hard mode version probably isn't the best idea. ![]() ![]() On the parts about PVE content, I am not sure if I agree entirely with you. Hearthstone tries to do something like that with Fireside Gatherings, an in person meetup to play Hearthstone, but I am not sure how successful and popular those are. But your point stands, a free or very cheap weekly event would be welcome One of the best parts of FNM though is the social aspects, and finding a way to encourage social play in a digital card game is not trivial. I personally have never seen a free FNM, normally they have small entry like $5 for constructed or $15 for draft. I don't think "alleviate" is the word you are looking for, in fact, I think it is the opposite of the word you are looking for. While that is not necessarily a bad thing (since if you win more games than you lose then you should see progress on the ladder in the long term) this issue is alleviated by the low player count numbers and a lack of high tier rewards for the competitive players.
